Does The New IG Algorithm Hate Artists?

Here are the latest Instagram Algorithm changes & how they may impact your account.

Hi again,

I’ve seen some artists and creatives fall for rumors about the new Instagram Algorithm and the new Meta Verified program rollout, so I thought it would be a good time to discuss — and debunk!

✨ The New IG Algo Explained

✴️ More reach for smaller creators by expanding to non-followers
According to Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, the old algorithm first recommended a post to your followers. Then, depending on how much engagement the post received, it would recommend it to non-followers. With the new algorithm, your post is recommended to both followers and non-followers from the outset to assess its performance.

In theory, if you create an engaging post, you should see its reach grow more quickly and potentially further than before. Learn more in this video.

🎨 The new algorithm rewards original content over re-posted content.
If an account re-posts your artwork or photo, the algo should detect that yours is the original post and credit you. Overall great news for artists! I still haven’t seen this in action, so i’m interested to see how well it works. Learn more here.

🚫 Removing aggregators from recommendations.
Accounts that just re-post are basically being demoted from recommendations in order to prioritize original content, so it’s a great time to create original content! Learn more.

Basically, the new IG algorithm should in theory, help artists out especially smaller creators. It’s a bit unclear what qualifies as a “smaller creator,” but let’s all hope for the best. In any case, your main priority when trying to grow your account should always be consistent and high-quality content, and for that — you need an awesome content calendar 😜

Get My Notion Content Calendar Template & Video Workflow

One of the biggest ways to stay consistent with content on Instagram — and elsewhere! — is by using a robust and organized content calendar. I’ve been tinkering with my personal Notion content calendar for about a month now getting it just-right for you and I can’t wait to share the template with y’all soon.

CREATIVE TREND
SHOT FROM THE CEILING

If you find that all your Reels and TikToks are starting to look the same, it’s time to take filming to new heights — literally! Grab your tallest tripod (or maybe some duct tape), and film from the ceiling down. Unlike standard overhead shots, these are more like birds-eye views and really help set the scene and give context to your shot. It definitely can be tricky to film, and please don’t break your phone in the process, but feel free to give it a shot if you can hack it 👀

↗️ TRENDING AUDIOS ↗️

DEEPLY STILL IN LOVE

This audio already came and went on TikTok, so it’s only natural that it’s starting to trend on Instagram. I would use this for a fun process video, juicy painting close ups, or even a creative vlog.

WHAT SCARES YOU MORE?

I found this trending inspirational audio and I think it would do well paired with some aesthetic B-roll of you working on your creative practice. Don’t overthink it 😉

AS TIME FLIES

Here’s an audio that really builds up and feels reflective and peaceful. Creators are using it in a variety of ways, but I do think it’s a perfect song to share something vulnerable or introspective with your audience about your creative practice.

As always, if you use any of these trends or audios in your next reel, don’t hesitate to tag me or send it over! If you have any lingering questions, feel free to hit reply.
