The Art of the Comeback Post

Your no-guilt guide to getting back in the algorithm's good graces 🙏

Welcome to Your Content Support Group Session,

Today, I want to chat about making your Instagram or TikTok or YouTube comeback. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably meant to post consistently but you did it for a week and then fell off.

No problem, I’ve done that a million times. Here’s my mentality around it. Whenever you stop posting consistently, other people that your followers follow and have recently engaged with become prioritized in their feeds. So the next time you post, you really have to fight for placement and for engagement. That’s why being inconsistent really hurts you TBH.

So what's my strategy when I'm trying to make a comeback and get my followers' attention? I tend to post something that I know will work well. And what works? Things that are shareable, and what's shareable? Relatable content or valuable content.

Let me give you some real examples:

In the past, I've come back to my feed with comics. People can usually relate and connect with a story and it usually gets traction. Plus, I like making them. Win-win.

This time around, I decided to come back with a Gift Guide! My thinking was: it's timely, people find it valuable and shareable right now, and guess what? My theory was right. Despite being mostly MIA on Instagram, I was able to get more shares and likes than my regular posts.

Here's the game plan now: I'm going to use this momentum to stay consistent and keep posting. Moving forward all of my posts don't have to keep being gift guides, but now I'm back in people's feeds and I just have to make it worth their while so they hit like, drop a comment, or share it with a friend.

One last thing (and this is important): you don’t need to acknowledge how long you've been gone. At least not as the first thing, mostly because it's boring, but also because most of the time people don't notice, so why call it out? Just pick up where you left off!

THIS WEEK’S GROUP ASSIGNMENT:

The Comeback Carousel!

The Assignment: Let’s dust off your Instagram or TikTok, and finally post again! For this week’s assignment, choose 3-7 images that capture the latest happenings in your creative life. You can include both professional and personal updates. Not everything has to be a major update either, it can be the little things!

Steps:
1. Create the title for your comeback post, here are some to get you started:
- In [Month], I’m Grateful for…
- How I’ve Changed Since [Month or Milestone]
- I Did [XYZ] and Learned # of Things
- How I Spent [Month]
- My Desk/Studio Lately

I prefer the ones that provide a bit of a little takeaway. I just think for a comeback post, people will likely swipe through it more if they’re curious about things they should also learn, or be grateful for, or work on, you know?

2. Collect 3-5 Photos that relate to your title. You can even make a collage for some of the images, or have an image inside an image.

3. Using Procreate or Adobe Fresco, digitally hand draw notes or comments about each photo. If you have a title to your carousel (step 1) you can make it relate to that!

If you don’t have a tablet, you can also use Canva or Adobe Express to add the text, try to use fun yet legible fonts, to give it a little more personality.

4. Use the caption to expand on it a little bit and add even more context to the theme of your comeback post.

5. Add some music that sets the vibe, it helps if it’s also currently trending on IG (has the little up arrow sign next to it)

Inspo: There’s a lot of ways to create this post, but I think this one really exemplifies how simple yet super creative it can be!

🛠️ HELPFUL TOOLS 🛠️

ADOBE FRESCO

My favorite tool on my iPad is Adobe Fresco. It’s free for everyone to use on their iPad, just download it in the app store. If you happen have an Adobe Creative Cloud Membership, any file you create in Adobe Fresco will sync to your other Adobe programs like Adobe Express or Photoshop.

This is great because you can easily switch off between iPad and Desktop without having to airdrop or email yourself! I plan on using Adobe Fresco to put this together so I can draw using my favorite illustration brushes and techniques right on my images.

This isn’t sponsored! I genuinely use Adobe Fresco for all my iPad drawing.
